What is the IT/GIS Department?
The IT/GIS department is comprised of a part-time coordinator who administers the IT and GIS needs for the Town.
What is IT?
IT Stands for Information Technology which is a term that encompasses all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use information in its various forms (business data, voice conversations, still images, motion pictures, multimedia presentations, and other forms. It's a convenient term for including both telephony and computer technology in the same word. In North Stonington the IT side of the GIS/IT Department has the focus of Long Range Computer Systems Planning, Computer Software Support and Computer Hardware Maintenance.
What is GIS?
GIS Stands for Geographic Information Systems which is defined as a system of computer hardware, software and data for collecting, storing, analyzing and disseminating information about areas of the earth. For land transportation purposes, GIS is defined as a highway network (spatial data which graphically represents the geometry of the highways, ie, an electronic map) and its geographically referenced component attributes. GIS is primarily used by the town of North Stonington for Property Assessment, Planning, Emergency Management and Emergency Services.
Duties & Responsibilities
The IT/GIS Department is responsible for the management of Town Computer Software-Hardware, Project Coordination for Technological Initiatives, Management of the GIS System and GIS Map Production. This department supports all departments - boards and commissions in the Town of North Stonington.
