First Selectman Weekly Blog Update 7-6-2018

Selectman’s update- Burn permits, highway updates, year end closeout, meeting schedules

Happy Friday everyone,

Another busy week concludes here in North Stonington. This past week Hewitt Farm Committee met on Monday, Historic Village improvement committee on Tuesday, and Planning and Zoning on Thursday.

Things remain on schedule for the school building project. Please visit buildingwheeler.com for updates as things progress.

We’d like to thank the North Stonington Garden club for all of the work they do keeping our town hall and village green looking great as well as other areas around town. We truly appreciate their efforts!

The Fire Marshall George Brennen issues burn permits for the town. It should be noted that piles that are intended to be burned must be clean and free of hazardous materials. Feel free to call George at 860.599.3829 if you need information on burn permits. You may also go to the town website under Fire Protection and Safety for information on how to obtain one.

The North Stonington Quarterly should have arrived in everyone’s mailboxes. We are so thankful to quarterly editors Nita Kincaid and Lisa Mazzella for their continued work on this wonderful publication for our town. It is full of great updates on many things happening in town.

I have had discussions over the last week with The Town of Westerly leadership regarding Boombridge. We are optimistic that we will work towards securing funding for the necessary repairs. Design work for the bridge is nearly finished and the goal is to go out to bid for the project this fall and begin work next spring. We will keep people posted as the plans come to fruition.

This week the highway team assisted in repaving of Pinecrest Road with new asphalt. We removed and repaved two of eight designated areas on Wyassup road that needed repair.  The new roof work began on the salt shed at the highway garage. Mowing continued on Reutemann, Wyassup, Ravenwood, and Boombridge.  One of two roadside mowers is down for minor repairs and is expected to return to service shortly.

Next week the highway team will continue removing and replacing areas of roadway on Wyassup Road. We will have these repairs complete prior to the fair. Mowing is expected to continue on Reutemann Road and Babcock Road. Pinecrest Road is expected to be finished on Wednesday 7/11 and all driveway aprons and curbing will be replaced.

Next week the auditor will be in town hall working on year end closeout and reconciliations.  The Selectmen will have a meet and greet next week with leadership from the Eastern Pequot Tribe since neither leadership boards have yet met. We look forward to meeting with our neighbors and exploring opportunities.

The School Modernization Building committee meets next week Monday, Board of Selectmen on Tuesday, Inland Wetlands & Board of Education on Wednesday,  and Planning and Zoning on Thursday.

Finally the North Stonington Fair takes place beginning next Thursday.  It is one of the best fairs around so consider coming out to enjoy the festivities. For more information check out www.northstoningtonfair.org

Have a great week!
