First Selectman Weekly Update 10-25-2019

Hello North Stonington!

We hope everyone had a great week!

We are happy to report the outdoor precautions recommended by Ledge Light Health District have been modified.  Although the risk of EEE transmission will not be eliminated until we experience a hard frost, the likelihood of human infection is extremely low. Please see Ledge Light’s most recent press release here… https://llhd.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/EEE_Update.pdf

Thanks to everyone who attended the debate of Selectmen candidates on Monday evening. Special thanks to the League of Women’s Voters and the Wheeler Library for hosting the event. It was a spirited discussion and many questions were answered. Our school’s Wheeler Broadcasting Team also recorded the debate and it is available on the town’s website for viewing….

North Stonington was among 24 cities and towns to receive the first certifications for best practices in land use and economic development by the Connecticut Economic Development Association. Congrats to Town Planner Juliet Hodge for her leadership in this initiative.

This week the Selectmen awarded the bid on the tanker which had been part of this year’s budget. We would like to thank the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company for their work analyzing the bid packages which was a time-consuming task. Once the contract is signed which will happen soon the truck will take just over a year to build. We will keep you posted as construction on the tanker progresses.

The Affordable Housing Committee will be hosting a "Community Conversation" this Wednesday October 30th at 6:30pm at 297 Norwich-Westerly Road (new Middle High School cafeteria). We invite everyone in the community to come to this event which will take place at the new middle high school to discuss your thoughts on what affordable housing in North Stonington should and should not look like. We also will have a State Director of Policy, Research and Housing Support Michael Santoro will be helping to facilitate these discussions and talk about state minimum requirements. This is an event not to be missed so please mark your calendars.

That’s it for today, we hope everyone has a great weekend!
