First Selectman Weekly Update 8-30-2019

Hello North Stonington!

Hopefully you have seen the update regarding the positive EEE tests in the local area including North Stonington. Please be sure to take the precautions listed here at Ledge light Health Districts site…https://llhd.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/EEE-Press-Release-LLHD_Uncas-2019-0827.pdf
Please avoid outdoor activities 1 hour prior to and following dawn and dusk.

This past week I was able to attend a mid-session congressional update hosted by Joe Courtney in Norwich. He detailed the many accomplishments happening in Congress and the effect on our local area. Thanks to Congressman Courtney for this opportunity to chat about local issues.

On September 7th there will be hazardous waste collection at the old Wheeler High School, 298 Norwich Westerly Road, from 9am-1pm. This is a great opportunity to get rid of materials that cannot be disposed of otherwise. For a list of items that you can dispose of see this link http://scrrra.org/how-do-i/recycle-hazardous-waste . Paper shredding is also available.

Also on September 7th don't forget about our Community Conversation about the greater village area. Please come to join your neighbors and discuss ideas about your North Stonington village. The Community Conversation will run from 9-11am at the Library so perhaps join us then go around the corner to dispose of your waste.

This week a meeting took place with Greenskies who will be installing the solar arrays on the Middle High School and Center for Emergency Services. Those projects will begin soon and we look for completion by the end of November. The installation of these arrays should save us approximately 40% on our energy bills and reduce our carbon footprint substantially.

Work continues on the 3bay garage at the Center for Emergency Services. The sitework is complete and footings have been poured. As a reminder this is the final piece to complete the emergency services center project which will be finished within the original approved budget. We anticipate completion by November.

The Assekonk Dam has been completely cleared of the beaver dam and all vegetation that was slowing movement of the water thus causing drains to be slow to empty. Thanks again to the North Stonington Highway crew for their help and DEEP for coming out to finish the job. The crew is continuing work inspecting catch basins, drains, and dams around town to be sure all are cleared of debris. Mowing and tree work also continue as well as some paving recently done on Denison Hill and Sleepy Hollow Road.

Please remember tax bills are due by this Tuesday. As long as your bill is postmarked Tuesday it is considered on time so please pop it in the mail or feel free to pay online here…https://www.mytaxbill.org/inet/bill/home.do?town=northstonington . The tax office will be open 9-3 on Tuesday as well.

NoStoFest is around the corner! It will take place on September 21st and will feature all things North Stonington! Local bands, food, and entertainment will be bursting in the village. If you are interested in volunteering to help please contact nostofest@gmail.com . We are also looking for folks to enter the chili cookoff! You can also email nostofest@gmail.com to find out how to enter your recipe and get a chance to be crowned NoSto Chili master!

As a reminder the Town Hall will be closed Monday to observe the Labor Day Holiday. We hope everyone has a very safe and happy Labor Day weekend!
