North Stonington weekly update 11.5.2021- Election results, remaining committee openings, NSVFC reminder and more!

Happy Friday North Stonington!

Another wonderful week comes to a close here in our town!

Election day has come and gone and we have a new group of officials coming in! We are so thankful for our poll workers who ran another flawless election. Thanks to everyone who voted and those who were willing to serve the town in these important elected positions. We wish everyone the best of luck! While a few positions were put to service immediately per statute, most will begin their service on Tuesday November 16th. For a list of the election results on our sample ballot click here: https://www.northstoningtonct.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif4806/f/uploads/11-2-2021_election_results_0.pdf

After the election we do still have some elected and appointed positions available. Due to the minority representation rules some vacancies must be of a certain party. The following positons are still of need in town…

  • Zoning Board of Appeals – 1 Alternate (cannot be Republican)
  • Affordable Housing Committee – many vacancies
  • Hewitt Farm Committee – 1 regular member – any party ; 1 alternate (cannot be Democratic)
  • Recreation Commission – 2 vacancies- any party
  • Cable TV Advisory Council of Southeastern Connecticut – 1 regular member vacancy; 1 Board of Education representative vacancy (any party)
  • Economic Development Commission – 1 regular and one alternate member (must both be Democratic per ordinance, if after 90 days no member of the same (Democratic) political party is available, then the positions can be opened up to unaffiliated electors)

Should you wish to volunteer for any of these positions please fill out the application for boards and commissions https://www.northstoningtonct.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif4806/f/uploads/application_for_boards_and_commission_writeable.pdf and return to townclerk@northstoningtonct.gov to be considered!

North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company wants to remind everyone to change the batteries in their smoke detectors. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 71% of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. This reinforces how important it is to take the time to test smoke detectors. If you are in need of 9 volt batteries for your smoke detectors please stop by the CES building and see a firefighter to receive yours. COVID rules apply with masks to be worn and ID shown for proof of North Stonington residency while picking up the batteries. LedgeLight Health District (LLHD) has COVID testing locations available for anyone who needs them. Unfortunately the virus is not gone and we continue to see infections. We encourage everyone to get tested if they show symptoms so you do not inadvertently infect someone else. You may have also seen vaccinations have been approved for ages 5-11 now. LLHD is encouraging everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. The benefits of this vaccine far outweigh any detriments. LLHD is encouraging patience with providers as the new age groups have just become eligible for vaccine the distribution channels will be opening up in the coming weeks.

The highway crew this week was busy as usual. We cut trees on Wyassup Road and cleared the remaining branches from the sides of the roads. Damaged guardrails were fixed on Puttker, Wintechog Hill, Babcock, and Yawbux roads. Pillars were installed around the new generator and propane tanks at the Town Hall. Winter sand was hauled and mixed for winter preparation. New motors were installed on the garage doors at the transfer station for bay 1 and 5. Truck 1 and 12 received oil changes. Babcock and Wyassup roads were mowed. Next week the highway crew will continue to cut trees and haul sand. Winter preparations with plows and trucks will continue. Repairs will continue on damaged guard rails.

That’s it for today. Have a great week!
