North Stonington Weekly update 5.14.2021 – Vote this Monday, Treasury Guidance, Committee Vacancies and More!

Happy Friday North Stonington,

We hope you are ready to enjoy some beautiful weather this weekend!

The Referendum for the fiscal year 2021-2022 budget is happening this Monday! Polls are open between 6am and 8pm at 298 Norwich Westerly Road at the Education Center (former middle high school). We hope you will come out and let your voice be heard!

You may have seen the CDC has changed their guidance on masks. Please be patient as the Governors mandate does not expire until May 19th. You will likely need to continue to wear masks until then. Let’s work together to stay patient and kind to the end of the line. We urge everyone who has not received a vaccine to please get one. The efficacy of the vaccine offers 95% protection for Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. It is proven to reduce hospitalizations if you were to contract COVID. Please get vaccinated so we can all stay healthy into the future.

Speaking of kindness and empathy, recent headlines this week regarding North Stonington schools spoke about a racially charged incident within our schools. The Board of Education takes these incidents very seriously and will be working on a solutions based approach. We as a society could all benefit from showing more empathy, kindness, understanding, and love whether it’s on social media or in our everyday activities. While we do face challenges, we are a special community and we hope everyone can try harder every day to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.

You may have seen our Conservation Commission came out with a new historic walking map of the village. Just another great outdoor activity for our community. Kudos to the commission for their continued work on coming up with new fun things to do here in town.

The Treasury Department has come out with its guidance regarding the use of the American Rescue Plan funding of which North Stonington looks to be receiving around $500,000.00 and possibly another $1,000,000.00 from county funding. This is still to be determined. We are holding a public meeting on Monday June 7th from 6-8pm with all of our Board and Commission members to discuss the future use of these funds. This is a public meeting and everyone is invited to join.

We have a few committee vacancies in town which we would look to appoint members for:  Affordable Housing Committee, Hewitt Farm Committee Alternate, Sustainability Committee, Recreation Commission and The Cable Television Advisory Council of Southeastern Connecticut. If you are interested in being a part of these important groups please fill out the application by Clicking Here it to our town clerk at townclerk@northstoningtonct.gov

In addition to these appointed vacancies we are in need of folks to get involved in the elected positions in town. Here is a list of the vacancies for the upcoming November election. If you are interested in putting your name forth, you also can email the Town Clerk or Registrars or stop by Town Hall for information on how to get involved.

Finally, the Highway Crew remains very busy as always. The Highway Crew installed an apron, loamed, and planted grass on Puttker Road. Sweeping was done on Northwest Corner, Millville Pentway, and Holly Roads. Mowing took place on Wintechog, Rocky Hollow, and Boombridge Roads. Washouts were filled on Wyassup Road. Truck 9 received new brakes and truck 3 received a transmission seal.

Next week the Highway Crew will replace a catch basin and pipe on Johnson road. Asphalt repairs will be made on Grindstone Hill Road. Town grounds will be mowed.

We hope you have a great weekend and DON’T FORGET TO VOTE MONDAY :)!
