North Stonington Weekly Update 5.28.2021- Budget Updates, Wheeler Library Event, Highway Updates and More!

nosto update

Good morning North Stonington!

We hope everyone has enjoyed the beautiful weather as it looks like we are in for some much needed rain over the holiday weekend.

The Food truck festival that had been planned to be held at 298 Norwich Westerly Road has been moved up to the Grange. It will be held on June 5th from 12-7 and will be free to attend!

The Wheeler Library is hosting a Vaccination Town Hall for anyone who has questions about the vaccine. This is a great opportunity to ask medical professionals and experts your questions. The event will be held virtually via Zoom on Tuesday June 1st at 7pm using this link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89856340153?pwd=Z28raGRGQkpnL29Gc25BYUU3TEs1Zz... by calling 19292056099 passcode 06359 Meeting ID: 898 5634 0153

As mentioned last week, our budget did not pass at referendum. This past Wednesday the Boards of Education and Selectmen presented modifications to their budgets to the Board of Finance. After discussion both Boards will now go back and finalize a budget to be recommended to the Board of Finance. The Board of Finance will then recommend a final budget to be sent to the Board of Selectmen to then go to Town Meeting. We anticipate another vote on the budget this month. It is important your town has an approved budget to continue seamless operations. Thank you to all who continue to participate in the process.

For those who were unaware, the North Stonington Lions Club who host the annual Memorial Day Parade had decided months ago not to hold the parade this year. We are looking forward to next year’s parade. We hope everyone can find time to reflect and give thanks this Memorial Day for our fallen who so bravely and selflessly served the greater good.

Town Hall will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. When we return on Tuesday the masks will no longer be required in Town Hall for those vaccinated. Feel free to continue to wear one if you prefer but the requirement will be lifted.

North Stonington schools continue to show their creativity. For those interested, Wheeler has released an online Art Show http://www.wheelerarts.org/ in place of the normal in person event. Take a look at some of the wonderful works of our local students!

We would also like to thank the school teachers, administrators, students, families, and Superintendent for the stellar job in keeping everyone safe during COVID. As the Superintendent stated in his weekly update this week, the best as we can tell through contact tracing, there was no virus spread within the schools and we appreciate everyone doing their best to stop the spread and protect one another. Great work everyone!

This week the Highway crew cleared trees from the wind storm on Stillman, Puttker, and Reutemann Roads. Trees were also cut on Main Street. A section of Grindstone was cut out and repaved. Mowing continued throughout town. Next week the crew will pave a portion of Johnson Road. Tree work on Main Street will continue and wood will be picked up. Mowing will continue.

We have to thank the many volunteers and businesses in town who take the time to beautify their areas. We thank the North Stonington Garden Club for their continued caretaking of the Town Hall and Village Green among other areas. Thanks to Megan and Lori for planting the pots at the Recreation Center. Thanks to the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company for continuing to maintain the monument area at the Recreation Center. Thank you to everyone who helps keep our memorial areas around town clean and maintained. Thank you to our Cemetery Commission and volunteers for up keeping these special areas of town. Thank YOU if you have helped in anyway. We truly have so many dedicated individuals who make our community beautiful and special for all to appreciate.

Have a great holiday weekend,

Mike Urgo First Selectman
