North Stonington Weekly Update July 16- UniteCT and Mobile Food Pantry Coming to North Stonington, Tax Bill, Assessor Updates and More!

Hi everyone,

We hope everyone had a great week!

In tax collection news, we are thankful for everyone who has paid their taxes thus far. You may have noticed when you received your bill that the return address is a Boston address. This is because we have joined many other towns in CT and signed up for a “lockbox” feature which helps us to more easily and efficiently process tax payments. You are welcome to still come in and pay your taxes, use our drop box in front of Town Hall, or pay online at: https://www.mytaxbill.org/inet/bill/home.do?town=northstonington like you always have. This is just one more way for us to collect taxes for those who choose to mail in their checks. Tax collector Donna Spelman is in the office 8am-1pm Monday-Friday each day to help answer any questions you may have.

Speaking of tax bills, there was an error affecting about 100 or so Chelsea Groton Mortgage customers who escrow their taxes. If you are one of these taxpayers, you likely received your bill which normally goes to the bank for payment. We have since contacted the bank and they are aware of the error caused by our billing company. We have been in contact with the bank and mailed them a copy of the bill, so no action is necessary on your part. Thank you for your understanding of this system error.

At our last Board of Selectmen’s meeting we had a presentation reviewing a concept design for sidewalks on part of Route 2. This concept would help provide better safety for pedestrian traffic, more connectivity for businesses, schools, and residents, and also safer options for cyclists. The slide deck can be seen here: https://www.northstoningtonct.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif4806/f/uploads/rt2nspresentation-fixed.pdf. The design was paid for through the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments and future funding of this project would be through federal or state resources as this is a state road.

A number of motor vehicles that needed to be registered this year did not appear on the motor vehicle tax list. Due to COVID-19, the Department of Motor Vehicles did not process the paperwork in time for the vehicle to appear on the list that was sent to the Town. The assessor’s office was made aware, and the Connecticut DMV should have the problem corrected for the supplemental motor vehicle list that will be coming out in late December 2021. For those that may have forgotten to update, or who registered late, the registration on their motor vehicle can be checked on the Department of Motor Vehicle’s web site. To check the status of your registration, go to google and type: CONNECTICUT DMV REGISTRATION STATUS.

On Tuesday July 20th UniteCT is coming to North Stonington for those in need. UniteCT is the program providing rental assistance. If you are a renter or a landlord and have needs this is your opportunity to get help right here in town. They will be available in the parking lot at 298 Norwich Westerly Road from 10am-3pm. No appointment is necessary.

Also on Tuesday July 20th between 1-3pm we will have the United Way’s mobile food pantry in town. Families will receive a box containing fresh produce, protein, nonperishables, and more.
No registration required. Families served on a first come-first served basis. Boxes will be loaded into your trunk. This also will take place at 298 Norwich Westerly Road at the Education Center.

This week the Highway Crew returned and cleaned equipment used for the North Stonington fair. Sweeping was done on Wyassup Road to clean mud tracks. A fallen tree was cut at the fair grounds and on Ryder Road. Milling and paving was completed in the Kingswood neighborhood and the millings were stockpiled at the transfer station. Mowing continued throughout town on Wrights, Reutemann, Hangman, and Wintechog Hill Roads along with the town property’s. Next week we plan to fix a storm drain on Wintechog Hill and storm drains will be cleared around town. Tree cutting, trimming, and mowing will continue throughout town.

We would like to sincerely thank all of the volunteers that helped the North Stonington Agricultural Fair be a rousing success once again! It was wonderful to see everyone together again enjoying the festivities.  It certainly takes a lot of work to plan and execute such a large multi-day event and we could not be more thankful for everyone who helped to make it possible and those who attended in support!

That’s it for today, we hope everyone has a great weekend!
