Referendum Results and Mil Rate Information

The town now has a full budget. The school portion of the budget passed 546 to 367 with 913 votes cast. Last night the Board of Finance set the mil rate at 28 mils.

Those unfamiliar with town might wonder why we are passing our 2017-2018 budget so late in the year. Due to the State of CT's very volatile budgeting crisis this year, the previous Board of Selectmen and Finance elected to wait until more information was available before putting a budget forward. Given the size of the cuts that had been initially proposed and their potential effect on North Stonington this was a prudent decision.

North Stonington over the years has a number of different votes throughout the year that end up happening at different times on a variety of issues. We realize this can be confusing and difficult for people to plan for. We hope to try and take steps to make the process more clear in the future so folks can plan to be involved and informed.

The tax bills for the second installment, which will also include the increase for the first installment, will be mailed by January 1st. You will have until February 1st to pay this bill. Please remember, the initial tax bills back in July went out at 27 mils. Given we have now set the mil rate at 28 mils, you will owe the 28 mils for the second payment, and 1 mil for the first payment that was not charged with the July billing. If you have not yet paid the July installment in full, please be aware that your new bill will not reflect any interest incurred on the first installment. To obtain an updated amount due please go to www.northstoningtonct.gov/payonline or call the tax office at (860) 535-2877 x 20 after January 1st.

We now begin planning the 2018-2019 budget. We are looking to implement tools and procedures that will help for a more transparent and interactive process. More to come as these steps develop.

Thank you to all who voted!
