Tomorrow’s storm

By now everyone has seen the weather report and is aware we are in for the first hurricane in a great many years. We are likely to experience widespread power outages, flooding, and precipitation above what is normally seen. It may be a rough day. Our emergency responders have been preparing, our highway team ready to respond, and our emergency operations center has been partially activated since Friday as we ready for the storm.

We suggest everyone sign up for CT Alerts if you have not already done so as that maybe the best way of receiving up-to-date communication on the storm. https://portal.ct.gov/CTAlert/Common-Elements/Common-Elements/Sign-up-for-CT-Alerts . While social media can be a helpful tool, be mindful of the source of your information especially during emergency situations.

In the event you must go out tomorrow do not drive through flooding and stay far away from downed power lines. Call 911 if you see a power line or experience an emergency. Report any outages to eversource as they will be the go-to on any power related questions.

If there are widespread outages that could mean that many people are without phone, internet, and power so do not be surprised if you are unable to communicate easily.

In the event an emergency shelter is to be opened, Red Cross is the lead and Stonington High School is the designated shelter. Over the years there has been discussion of having a shelter here in North Stonington, however, it takes a great deal of resources and volunteers who can commit to multi-day operations of such a shelter. We are grateful the Red Cross is able to mobilize in Stonington in the event such a need arises. Let’s hope it does not.

Above all please remain patient and understanding. If we get hit hard, it’s going to take time to get things back to normal. We have dedicated volunteers, and wonderful neighbors. Take care of yourself and each other and we will come out of this as the strong community we always are.

Be well,

Mike Urgo
