First Selectman Weekly Update 2-28-2020

Hello North Stonington! Another busy week wraps up here and we hope everyone had an enjoyable one.

This past week we held a couple of great events along with our many regularly scheduled meetings.

On Monday Oz Griebel, former gubernatorial candidate, came to town to talk about voting reform initiatives that are ongoing. For those unable to attend but interested in the discussion please take a look at the Facebook recording that was taken here if you are on Facebook… https://www.facebook.com/milltownmonitor/videos/227244305099808/

This week we held our first "State of the Town" where project updates and other items were discussed. Please consider watching this video recorded by local news publication, the Milltown Monitor. The video can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlj0sw-WKlE  . We thank everyone who attended both in person and online to become more informed of town happenings.

I had the chance to speak at North Stonington Schools this week with Civics classes to discuss the structure of our town government and how students may get involved with issues that are important to them. Thanks to the teachers who work hard to create passion in our schools. It was inspiring to see our students excited about learning and our government!

Speaking of our schools, work is moving along fast and furiously at the new Elementary school. Mechanicals on the roof are being tested, windows are going up both in and outside the building. Flooring throughout the building is close to completion apart from the gym and the carpeted areas. Many rooms are done apart from drop ceilings and minor detail work. We remain on schedule and budget.

In highway news our Historic Village welcome signs went up this week. These signs had been in storage for many years and we are excited to have them on full display welcoming folks to our special village. The crew also cleared waterways on Boombridge Road. Dead trees were cut and removed at the highway shop on Wyassup Road. A new hose reel was installed for the diesel fuel truck. Next week the crew plans to continue to cut brush and trees along roads. Waterways will be cleared of sand and debris. Trucks will be maintained in preparation for the next winter storm.

The budgeting process continues as the Boards of Selectmen, Education, & Finance work on coming up with a budget that we feel the people in town can live with while funding the necessary initiatives in North Stonington. Please consider attending a meeting to be involved in the process. The meeting calendar can be found at www.northstoningtonct.gov .
