North Stonington Weekly Update 2/12/2021 – Committee Vacancies, Budget Process Continues, Highway Updates and More!

Happy Friday North Stonington,

We hope you are all having a good week. We may be in for another cold one this weekend.

The budget process continues here in North Stonington. The Boards of Finance and Selectmen heard presentations from our last groups this past Wednesday in a joint meeting. Now the Board of Selectmen will work to prepare a budget for the Board of Finance’s consideration. Once one is agreed upon it will be going to public hearing for the general public to weigh in prior to a referendum. We appreciate all of the volunteers and staff who contribute to the process of putting a fiscally responsible budget together. Consider joining one of our meetings to share your feedback.

Today the vaccine clinic here in North Stonington took place. We were very happy to have the clinic filled by most of our residents. While we do not know if another clinic will take place in North Stonington we are assuming it is unlikely. It is more likely that as more vaccines become available the State will switch to larger sites to vaccinate larger amounts of people as the weeks go on. If you have not received your vaccine please keep trying to get an appointment. With 65+ just becoming eligible to receive it, there will undoubtedly be a bottleneck of appointments. Patience is the word of the day. You will be able to get your vaccine, it just may take some time. Our health providers are doing everything they can to administer as many vaccines as they have as quickly as they are able. We are truly appreciative of their work. • Planning and Zoning Commission Alternate (must be Republican due to minority representation and board balancing requirements)
  • Affordable Housing Committee – several openings
  • Hewitt Farm Committee Alternate - 1 opening
  • Inland Wetlands Commission - 1 opening
  • Recreation commission – 1 opening

The Board of Selectmen has also created one new Board and one new sub-committee. We are looking for volunteers for the new Traffic Commission Sub-Committee which will be charged with making road safety recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. We are also looking for anyone who is interested in making North Stonington a more sustainable community. The Town has received Sustainable CT recognition the past two years as a Bronze community. We are hoping to integrate sustainability actions into all of our Boards and Commissions in town and in everything that we do. This committee will be paramount in those efforts. Please consider submitting your name if you feel called to get involved. Here are the two group descriptions for these new groups…

This week the highway crew was busy plowing and sanding roads from numerous winter storms. Large snow piles were removed from the town halls, the rec parking lot, and the CES building. Waterways were cleared for melting snow and rain. A new plow blade was installed on truck 2’s plow and bearings were replaced on the sander. Trucks were washed and maintained in preparation for the next storm. Next week the highway crew will continue to cut trees and clear water ways. The driveshaft will also be repaired on truck 2.
