First Selectman Weekly Update 6-28-2019

Happy Friday North Stonington!

Another very busy week comes to a close here in town. We are busy at Town Hall preparing fiscal year end closeout while also preparing for our Town meeting tomorrow. We hope people will consider stopping by the town meeting which begins at 9am. We will have a short presentation followed by Q & A. We also will have tables at the back of the room for questions following the meeting.

As mentioned last week the Pavilion at Hewitt Farm is complete! Special thanks to Bill Ricker, Ed Harasimowitz as well as the recreation committee for all coming together to see this project through!

This week the Board of Selectmen authorized a resolution to proceed with becoming a SustainableCT town. We are hoping to sign up for this program next week and become the 85th town in the State to sign on to this initiative. The program allows for funding for certain projects and helps us highlight our sustainability initiatives around town. This is in line with our Plan of Conservation and Development and we look forward to working with the SustainableCT team to put North Stonington on the map. For more information about this program visit https://sustainablect.org. We also will be looking for volunteers to help on the SustainableCT workgroup so please reach out to our office if you are interested by emailing townclerk@northstoningtonct.gov.

This week the town closed on the sale of the 123A Clarks Falls Church which had been approved for sale by the town at our last meeting. The Palmers are looking forward to sprucing it up and we wish them the best with this town treasure!

This week the highway crew mowed Wintechog Hill Road and Boom Bridge. Trees were cut by Lewis Tree and the highway crew on Wyassup, Reutemann, Hangman Hill, and at the transfer station. Boombridge Road was swept with the sweeper. Another phase of guardrails was completed by Durham Fence. Foreman Don and Assistant foreman Joe sorted through the old posts and salvaged posts in good condition.

Next week the highway crew will help with preparation for the agricultural fair by mowing parking lots and cleaning equipment. Lewis Tree Company will continue to cut trees on Reutemann and Ryder. Mowing will continue on Tom Wheeler, Sleepy Hollow, and Putker Road.

I would like to give special thanks to the town, state, and Eversource tree crews for really doing a great job taking down trees this year. This is the time to make sure we have taken advantage of good weather to clean up overgrowth to help when storms come. Thanks to everyone for their attention to detail on tree removal!

The town hall will be closing at 12:30pm Tuesday July 2nd for our employee appreciation event. We also will be closed July 4th for the Holiday.

That’s it for today! Have a great weekend,
Mike Urgo First Selectman
