North Stonington Weekly update 8-28-2020- Community calendars on sale, hazardous waste collection day, ribbon cutting for school this Sunday, and more!

Hello North Stonington!

Another week comes to a close here in town.

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. We all know of someone whose life has been claimed by addiction. We will have a few banners and signs around to bring awareness to this important day.

A ribbon cutting has been scheduled at the newly renovated North Stonington Elementary School! We cannot allow people to walk through and tour the building as we are currently keeping traffic to a minimum because of COVID. We will however have a short ceremony and a virtual tour of the building for people to see. The ceremony will take place outside the building and masks will be required for anyone attending. We hope you can join us to celebrate this great accomplishment this Sunday August 30th at 3pm at 311 Norwich Westerly Road, North Stonington CT. https://www.facebook.com/events/916884248819104/

This week the highway crew mowed and cut trees along the school trail. Debris and material were taken out of the elementary school playground and leveled off for the new playground that was fundraised for. Brush was cut along the fence at the bus lot, and bushes were trimmed at the Town Hall. Sweeping took place on Wyassup Lake Road and downed trees were removed around town. A storm drain on Wyassup Road was repaired. Tractor mowing took place on Reutemann, Hewitt, Button, Ryder, and the transfer station.

A hazardous waste collection day will take place at North Stonington Education Center (former middle high school) on September 12th from 9am-1pm. Details about what can be brought to the event can be found by clicking this link http://scrrra.org/how-do-i/recycle-hazardous-waste/. Clean out all of those materials (including paper shredding) and stop by to properly dispose of them at no cost!

The Town will be hosting a rabies clinic with services provided by Dr. Morrone on Saturday, September 5 from 9am-11am at the Rec Center, 267 Norwich Westerly Road.  The clinic will cost $15, please bring exact amount in cash and bring your dog’s previous rabies certificate to receive the 3 year vaccine.  Masks are required and animals will be brought into the building without their owner to be vaccinated.

Finally this week we hit the “submit” button on our application for Sustainable CT Silver status. The oversite committee will review all applications so we are hopeful we will be recognized. It was a great exercise to go over all of the incredible accomplishments in town in only the past year such as the creation and distribution of our town-wide trail map courtesy of our conservation commission. The hard work of some new committees in town like the Emergency Services Operations Committee, School Repurposing Committee, and School Reopening Task Force. These were just a few examples of big projects and undertakings oure many dedicated volunteers in town helped work towards and were highlighted in our application. We will report back when we hear the results which is usually sometime in October/November. Special thanks to Alexis Kahn for spearheading this initiative.

That’s it for today, have a great week!
