North Stonington weekly update 8.7.2020- Thank you to our volunteers, 5G presentation next Wednesday, absentee ballot return and primary next Tuesday

As of this 9:00 this morning 9% or around 249 households in our town are still without power. Eversource is currently working on restoration. This appears to have been a more catastrophic event than super storm Sandy for our state with many areas hit very hard. If you are in need of fresh water, a hose has been put out at the Center For Emergency Services building on Rocky Hollow Road for you to fill buckets/containers. The Wheeler Library is offering the ability to charge devices. Please help a neighbor in need as we get through this difficult time together.

This week was the last for our summer playground camp run by North Stonington Parks & Rec.  A big thank you to Lori Umphlett for a very successful fun program for the community.  Information for fall programs will be released soon through our website: https://www.northstoningtonrec.com/info/default.aspx

Absentee ballots can be requested for the primary election until August 10 and can be ballots can be submitted through the official ballot drop box outside Town Hall.  Absentee ballots must be received by August 11 to count, so keep this in mind when deciding whether to put them in the mail or drop them off in the box.  In person voting will be held at the Media Center at the North Stonington Education Center (old middle high school), 298 Norwich Westerly Road from 6am-8pm on August 11th

There are many questions about 5G. Knowing this we have invited PURA to give a virtual presentation on the topic. Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) is statutorily charged with regulating the rates and services of Connecticut’s investor owned electricity, natural gas, water and telecommunication companies and is the franchising authority for the states cable television companies. This workshop will offer the opportunity to hear from PURA Chairman Marissa Paslick Gillett on the state’s current small cell siting process, how municipalities can follow specific proceedings, provide input and intervene, as well as what is anticipated as 5G efforts continue to increase.  There will also be time for questions and answers. Please join via zoom using this link https://ctdeep.zoom.us/j/91803669901 or you may call 16468769923 and use meeting ID 918 0366 9901. This meeting will take place August 12th at 12:30pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/1037331380055964/

The school reopening task force continues the work on a safe and effective reopening of our schools. We are incredibly fortunate to have a small population and new buildings which will help us avoid many pitfalls seen in other areas of the country. These new buildings and small populous combined with Connecticut’s effective work at keeping the spread to a minimum will help assure the best results with our reopening plan. Feel free to check the school website or with school administration for more info.

We would like to thank our highway crew, eversource, North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company, North Stonington Ambulance, Troop E Montville and Emergency Management Director Gary Baron for the many hours of work over the last few days of this storm. We are incredibly lucky to have such capable and dedicated staff and volunteers here in North Stonington. We appreciate their hard work throughout this event.
